MTS, good or bad?Malaysian Trumpet Snails (MTS) are considered pests by some and a welcome, sometimes needed, addition by others. Are they good or bad for a Dwarf Shrimp aquarium? I think they are great, and here are a few reasons why: Great Clean Up Crew Great Health Indicator Substrate Oxygenation and Mixing Some don’t like them because their population can explode and they are livebearers so it is hard to control population spikes, but if they are not over fed the population will stay in check and there are some great benefits from having them! They are the biggest pests when trying to plant foreground plants, especially HC.

@Jason,
They can be a pain when trying to get new plants to root, but once rooted they provide oxygen/co2 to the roots and to the bacteria around the roots! So there is a give and take!

I think the Trumpet Snails are great! I have them in all my planted tanks. They’re like earthworms for your aquarium. If the population in your tanks are out of control, you could get a couple of Assassin Snails (Clea Helena). These are interesting snails in their own right. Eventually the 2 populations will reach equilibrium, with both reproducing in your aquarium.

@Evan,
I never thought of them like earthworms but that is a great way to put it!
