King Kong Shrimp – In the News
Yahoo News has recently posted an article about “King Kong Shrimp” and how expensive they are in Japan. The article doesn’t really go into much depth about the shrimp, other than it has a short life span and it is difficult to breed successfully, but it did mention many times how much the shrimp costs. Article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20091106/lf_nm_life/us_taiwan_shrimp King Kong Shrimp Info: The King Kong Shrimp is a selectively bred strain of the Bee Shrimp (Caridina cf. cantonenis) that has been bred to be almost pure black. The reason they are difficult to breed is because they have been so highly selectively bred causing genetic issues. What do you think of the King Kong Shrimp? Would you pay thousands of dollars for a shrimp? If you enjoyed this post, make sure you subscribe to my RSS feed!No related posts. |

It looks excellent, don’t get me wrong, but I wouldn’t pay that much for a shrimp…..maybe if there was a greater chance of breeding them.

@Andrew,
I would not pay that much either, and really an all black shrimp is not my thing! I enjoy having a black substrate in my aquariums and I want to see the shrimp I have!

Not for my wallet. But I am glad there are people somewhere who will pay to buy stuff like this. It means new strains will be developed. Some will never make it to the US or my price range, but some do. I am just glad there is someone else who will pay for the development costs.

@Jason,
Good point! Maybe they will continue working with the strain until it can breed more easily allowing the price to fall dramaticly!

I have always liked the color black but my second favorite color(and much cheaper)is red. I am still enjoying my red cherry shrimp and they are cheap! I also like Andrew’s post about black substrate as i think my cherry’s would look much better on black substrate. I will also add that as of today my oldest cherry is now two years two months old and almost two inches long (appox.1 3/4). I know there only expected to live two years but this big guy is showing no signs of slowing down. I plan to put together a website when i get the time and can put together a good show tank as the one i have now has no substrate and only a sponge filter. I am fairly new at shrimp raising but this definitely seems to be the way to go as far as breeding is concerned. I had a power outage and lost all but like ten, so i decided to go with this setup as it has less chance of disease(this is how i raise my angelfish) and the have taken over the tank. i estimate there is over a hundred of them in there now! Anyway i like the black variant but i’m sorry i’m gonna stick wit the cherry’s.

@Josh,
It is hard to beat the look of a bright red cherry shrimp on a nice dark substrate!
