Yellow Shrimp Color

Monday, February 15th, 2010

There has been a bit of discussion lately about making the color of a Yellow Shrimp darker and more vibrant. Well there are many factors in play here, but they are the exact same factors as the Red Cherry Shrimp!

I wrote an article called Redder Red Cherry Shrimp that I dove pretty deep into the subject.

The 3 main factors are:
Water Conditions
Environment
Genetics

A Shrimp with poor genetics will never be a deep vibrant yellow even under the best conditions while a shrimp with GREAT genetics may still be dull and colorless under poor conditions!

Self Cloning Crayfish (update 2)

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

The baby Self Cloning Crayfish are all over the aquarium now. They have become quite inquisitive and hungry. Whenever I feed them, they rush to the food and gather in large groups.

Just to show some scale on how big they are, here are a few pictures:

Let the clone wars begin!

The Self Cloning Crayfish are out and about on their own now! I was able to snap a picture of one of the babies. They are small enough to easily fit inside a straw from the fast food chain Wendy’s!

I am going to have to set up a grow out tank for these wonderful crayfish now!

Any suggestions?

Self Cloning Crayfish (update 1)

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Self Cloning Crayfish are normally very charismatic and outgoing. They spend a lot of time foraging and will often times react to an aquarist coming near the aquarium with what I call a two-claw salute (they raise their claws up in a defensive position). But, when the Self Cloning Crayfish becomes berried, she becomes a recluse.

It is difficult to keep a close eye on my berried female because she spends most of her time hidden in the caves and pvc pipe that I have provided for her. Today I caught a quick glimpse (not long enough to get a picture) of her and her babies. She has quite a bit of baby crayfish hanging on her tail.

They have hatched and are sticking with her. I have read that they will continue to stick with the adult female for anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.

I will keep as close of an eye on them as possible and update as often as possible!

Breeding Amano Shrimp – Journal – The restart!

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Last night I performed a fairly large water change in my Amano Shrimp aquarium and noticed some frantic breeding behavior by the males. This morning I found this:

Berried Amano Shrimp

This is the largest female I have and she is carrying a large amount of eggs. The more larva she hatches the better chance I have of raising them to full size!

Currently I have some salt water outside trying to grow some green water, so far, no luck!

I will update this journal as necessary!
