Red Cherry Shrimp in Acidic Water

Monday, January 18th, 2010

For the last few months I have had some Red Cherry Shrimp in an aquarium that was intended for Crystal Red Shrimp. I set it up with Aqua Soil Amazonia and quite a few plants and mosses. I keep the pH right around 6.0 and have some interesting observations for the Red Cherries!

Observations:
- The Red Cherry Shrimp grow slower
- Far less breeding activity observed
- Berried females have become more rare
- Life span seems shorter

If you have any observations of keeping Red Cherry Shrimp in water with such a low pH please feel free to share them!

Friday, March 21st, 2008

As of today all of the Cherry Shrimp are sold out!  BUT WAIT (I always wanted to say that) there is good news.  Over the last week there has been large amounts of shrimp hatching.

These are 1-3 day old shrimp and there are hundreds of them all over the aquarium.  They should be ready to sell in a few short weeks!

Cherry Shrimp Breeding Progress

Monday, March 17th, 2008

It has been a few months since I transferred my Cherry Shrimp population to their new larger aquarium and the population is beginning to explode.  It seems that almost every female is berried!

Here is the basic set up:
40-Gallon Breeder
ADA Aquasoil II substrate
Hang on back filter with 2 sponge prefilters
A few stem plants (Rotolla sp.)
PH stays around 7.0-7.2

I feed the shrimp everyday with a verity of foods, and they always react quickly to the food!
