White Amano Shrimp

The White Amano Shrimp is often credited with helping start the Dwarf Shrimp hobby in the United States. White Amano Shrimp were introduced to the American aquarium hobby around 2012. Takashi Amano, author of The Natural Aquarium and a renowned planted tank pioneer, wrote about the effectiveness of White Amano Shrimp in controlling algae in planted aquariums. Many planted tank aquarists in America began stocking them in their tanks, and their popularity grew rapidly throughout the late 1990s.

White Amano Shrimp Behavior

White Amano Shrimp are non-aggressive and very active. In aquariums without predators, they can often be seen grazing on algae found on plants, decorations, and substrate. During feeding time, they frequently gather in noticeable groups, creating a striking and lively display in the tank.

White Amano Shrimp Care

White Amano Shrimp are relatively low-maintenance and hardy. They do well both in groups and individually. Throughout the day, they alternate between hiding and actively exploring in search of food.

A planted tank greatly benefits White Amano Shrimp, as plants provide surfaces for microorganisms to grow, offering a natural and continuous food source.

White Amano shrimp thrive in slow to moderate current with well-oxygenated water. As with all shrimp, monitor for ammonia spikes and high nitrate levels, and always avoid copper exposure.

Buying White Amano Shrimp

As with all aquatic invertebrates, it is extremely important to ensure copper does not enter the aquarium. Copper is toxic to all dwarf shrimp. Many aquarium medications contain elevated levels of copper, so it is not recommended to medicate a tank that houses White Amano Shrimp.

FAQ

How big do White Amano Shrimp get?

The females can reach up to around 1.5"–2", while the males stay a bit smaller, averaging around 1"–1.5".

How many White Amano Shrimp can I keep per gallon?

You can keep a large number of White Amano shrimp per gallon of aquarium water volume, as long as you start with at least a 5-gallon tank. Stay on top of maintenance, and the colony should balance itself.

How long do White Amano Shrimp live?

White Amano shrimp lifespan strongly depends on factors like water quality, diet, and temperature. In the right conditions, they can live at least a year, and sometimes up to two years.

How fast do White Amano Shrimp grow?

Pretty quickly! In the right conditions, they are able to grow from freshly hatched fry to breeding adults in about 4–5 months.

Is White Amano Shrimp easy to breed?

If optimal care requirements are met, the White Amano Shrimp is fairly easy to breed. It can be difficult to determine the sex of a White Amano shrimp. The males are slightly smaller and have shorter, thinner tail sections. The females are larger with a longer and wider tail section. In our shop, we sell great breeding aids to help make the process easier and more successful.

Will different shrimp species breed with each other?

Yes, most Neocaridina species will breed with other Neocaridina species, and many Caridina species will breed with other Caridina species. Neocaridina species will not breed with Caridina species. It is not recommended to keep any species that may interbreed with each other. Check out our dwarf shrimp compatibility chart to see what shrimp will not interbreed with White Amano Shrimp.

How often do White Amano Shrimp molt?

It depends on their age! White Amano shrimp grow very quickly. This also means they molt frequently (at least every few days at first) until they reach their adult size. After that, molting typically slows down to about once a month.

What is the diet of White Amano Shrimp?

White Amano Shrimp are omnivores and share the same diet that most dwarf shrimp enjoy. They will eat just about anything edible in an aquarium. White Amano shrimp are excellent algae eaters and will graze on naturally occurring algae.

Sinking pellets and blanched (boiled until soft) vegetables make great supplemental foods. However, White Amano shrimp will often need additional feedings beyond natural algae. Aquarium foods intended for bottom feeders and aquatic invertebrates are readily accepted, as are blanched vegetables.

You can find a wide variety of quality shrimp foods in our shop. The White Amano Shrimp you order are currently eating Ebita Breed – Quatro 2.

What type of filter should I use?

A sponge filter is the best option for a shrimp-only aquarium. Another good choice is a corner box filter. Most power filters can suck smaller shrimp into the intake and harm them, so they are not recommended unless properly covered. In our shop, you can find a selection of shrimp-safe filters.

What are the best plants for White Amano Shrimp?

Almost any aquarium plants work well with White Amano shrimp! They love to hide in and forage on plant leaves. A few personal favorites include java moss, floating plants, and hair grass (Eleocharis acicularis). All the plants we sell are suitable for White Amano Shrimp. You can learn more about freshwater aquarium plants on our website.

What are the best tank mates for White Amano Shrimp?

White Amano shrimp, like other dwarf shrimp, are very peaceful and vulnerable creatures. They will not harm tankmates but can easily fall prey to hungry fish. A single-species aquarium is often the safest choice.

Peaceful invertebrates like other shrimp and small snails can also be good companions. Check out our dwarf shrimp compatibility chart to see what shrimp pair well with White Amano Shrimp.

Aquarists who don’t mind losing some shrimp may combine them with certain peaceful species, including Corydoras, Otocinclus catfish, and small schooling fish. The shrimp population can often sustain itself if there are plenty of hiding places. If you need more hiding spots, we offer a variety of shrimp-safe decorations in our shop.

What is the best way to acclimate my new White Amano Shrimp?

When adding new shrimp to an established tank, it is important to properly acclimate them to their new environment. Shipping and relocation are stressful for shrimp. Proper acclimation allows them to gradually adjust to temperature and water parameters, reducing the risk of shock or loss.

You can find our step-by-step acclimation guide on our website.
