Most freshwater snails are peaceful snails other than assassin snails. They will do well with peaceful community fish. Larger species of fish might try and eat snails or snail eggs. Keeping fresh water snails in the aquarium hobby is a rewarding experience.

The snails provide a slime trail for freshwater shrimp. Keeping shrimp and a snail population together in a freshwater aquarium is a match made in heaven.

Most aquarium snails need same water parameters as freshwater shrimp. Keeping snails in freshwater aquarium is an easy task. A vital to keep in check is General Hardness (GH). Most local aquarium trade pet stores will offer free water testing.

In general freshwater snails like mystery snail or nerite snails will feed on soft algae in the aquarium. They are excellent algae eaters in general. They also feed on uneaten food like leftover fish food, dead plant matter, blanched green vegetables.

They are simply great scavengers and tank cleaners. In general they do not bother live plants. Keeping them in planted tank is fine as only a few species will be found eating live plants.

Breeding Freshwater Snails

While certain species of snails like nerite snails need brackish water to reproduce. Many do not. Rabbit snails for example produce one baby at a time in standard aquariums. Mystery snail, Ramshorn snails, pond snails and other have multiple snails at one.

Mystery snails have been know to over populate tanks. Mystery snail, Malaysian trumpet snails, among other snails can be thinned out by manually removing or adding assassin snails.

How many Nerite snails should be kept together?

Nerite snails need brackish water to reproduce so overpopulating freshwater aquariums isn't an issue. Keeping a group of 2-6 nerite snails per 10 gallons in community tanks is common.

Will freshwater snails crawl out of tank?

Even on top covered tanks, the possibility that Nerite Snail or other types crawling out is quite common in some aquariums. If your tank has a lip edge the snails will likely not be able to get out fully.
