Is Amazon Frogbit Good for Shrimp Tanks?

Yes, Amazon Frogbit is one of the best floating plants for shrimp tanks. Its long, hanging roots provide excellent shelter for baby shrimp and create additional surface area for biofilm growth, which is a natural food source that shrimp love to graze on throughout the day.

Amazon Frogbit also helps improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients from the aquarium. As the plant grows, it can help reduce nitrates and other waste compounds that accumulate in shrimp tanks. This makes it a valuable addition to both beginner and advanced shrimp aquariums.

Another benefit of Amazon Frogbit is the shade it creates. Many shrimp species, including Cherry Shrimp, Blue Dream Shrimp, and Crystal Red Shrimp, appreciate areas of reduced light where they can feel secure. The floating leaves help mimic natural habitats while encouraging shrimp to display more natural behaviors.

Amazon Frogbit - Limnobium laevigatum

Amazon Frogbit - Limnobium laevigatum is a floating plant native to Central and South America, commonly utilized in ponds and aquariums alike. Unlike many other floating plants, Amazon Frogbit boasts a larger size, making it an ideal choice for providing shade and shelter for shy aquatic species. With lily-like leaves that gracefully float on the water's surface, it also serves as a beneficial addition to terrariums and paludariums, offering a suitable habitat for small semi-aquatic creatures. This variety typically grows mature plants to spans of 2-4 inches per pod.

Amazon Frogbit - Limnobium laevigatum Uses

Floating aquarium plants like Amazon Frogbit are useful to provide cover on the surface of your aquarium. Having floating plants on your top water can limit the amount of light getting into your tank and thus help fight off algae. Additionally Amazon Frogbit - Limnobium laevigatum will use up excessive nitrates in your water column, in turn helping create a better stable environment for your livestock like shrimp, fish, and snails. In any shrimp breeding tank it is highly recommend to have some sort of floating plant like Limnobium laevigatum or others.

In aquascapes these floating aquarium plants add a new element to the design, and bring a natural top-water look to any planted tank.

Amazon Frogbit - Limnobium laevigatum Care

Amazon Frogbit like many floating plants prefer slow surface agitation. The biggest factor is lighting and nitrates in the water column available to the plant. It can accept a range of PH from 6.3-7.8 and still thrive well. Additionally Temps ranging from 62-82 are fine. It is a low demanding floating plant in terms of care. Providing it with nitrates will help it grow more quickly, but be mindful of your livestock when adding any fertilizers that might help with this. We recommend Thrive S as a good solution safe for shrimp and what plants need.

Frog bit is fine in many levels of hardness ranging from 3-6 GH to 12-15 GH. When keeping any plant generally it is more important to be constant in parameters, rather than spot on with certain parameters. A constant tank of lighting, parameters, temps will lead to a more stable planted tank.

Amazon Frogbit - Limnobium laevigatum Propagation

Juvenile Plants are grow out by side shoots of the mature plants. There is not much help needed besides providing optimal water conditions as noted in the care section above. It will grow to overtake the entire surface of an aquarium if provided good conditions and left unchecked.

Please note Amazon Frogbit plant is considered an invasive species in some states and several countries. This is due to people releasing it into pond, lakes, or other bodies of water where the emergent leaves left unchecked propagate and spread and soon take over. Please practice safe disposal of these plants if unwanted.

Problems Associated with Amazon Frogbit - Limnobium laevigatum

Melting:

This arises from flow issues, like excessive flow, resulting in plant decay known as browning. Thus, maintain a gentle flow to uphold plant health. Excessive lighting can also induce melting. Lower LED light intensity and shorten the photoperiod to gradually revive plant health. While generally easy to care for, these melting concerns should be kept in mind when caring for Amazon Frogbit.

Overcrowding:

Amazon Frogbit, known as Limnobium laevigatum, rapidly multiplies in ideal environments, swiftly blanketing the entire surface while efficiently absorbing biological waste. However, preventing it from completely covering the surface is crucial, as it can obstruct light penetration, thereby inhibiting the growth of plants below and creating an inhospitable environment for them.

Holes in leaves:

Tiny perforations in the leaves of Amazon Frogbit suggest a potassium deficiency. Rectify this by administering potassium-rich fertilizers such as Flourish Advance to counterbalance the low potassium levels in the aquarium water. With appropriate treatment, any floating plant should swiftly rebound!

Buying Amazon Frogbit - Limnobium laevigatum

When buying any plants online it is important to ask questions and know what you are getting. Shipping plants is not hard, but there are many things to consider. The current weather conditions of your area if mild are ideal, otherwise in harsh cold or hot climates during peak season it can be difficult to order plants in the mail and allow them to travel for 2-4 days before arriving to you. Consider heat packs or cool packs when needed for plants depending on current temperatures.

There are many sellers of plants online which include marketplaces and website alike. We here at TheShrimpFarm.com proudly sell our own Amazon Frogbit and we grow it in house! We also offer a snail free guarantee if that is desirable for your tank situation.

Amazon Frogbit Care Guide

Amazon Frogbit (Limnobium laevigatum) is one of the easiest floating aquarium plants to keep. It grows quickly, helps improve water quality, and is an excellent choice for shrimp tanks, community aquariums, and planted tanks.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 70°F–82°F

  • pH: 6.0–8.0

  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water

  • CO2: Not required

Amazon Frogbit adapts well to a wide range of aquarium conditions, making it a great option for both beginners and experienced aquarists.

Lighting Requirements

Amazon Frogbit thrives under moderate to high lighting but can also survive in lower-light aquariums. Stronger lighting typically produces faster growth, larger root systems, and denser plant coverage.

Fertilization

Because Amazon Frogbit is a floating plant, it absorbs nutrients directly from the water column rather than through roots in the substrate. Regular use of a quality liquid fertilizer can help encourage faster growth and healthier leaves, especially in heavily planted or nutrient-poor aquariums.

Water Flow

Amazon Frogbit prefers calm water conditions. Excessive surface agitation or strong filter output can damage the leaves and slow growth. For best results, keep the plant in areas with gentle surface movement.

Maintenance

As Amazon Frogbit grows, it will produce daughter plants connected by runners. Excess plants can be removed easily to prevent the surface from becoming overcrowded. Regular thinning also helps ensure light can reach plants growing below.

Common Problems

Yellow Leaves

  • Often caused by nutrient deficiencies or insufficient lighting.

Leaves Staying Wet

  • Water splashing on the leaves can cause melting or decay. Frogbit performs best when the tops of the leaves remain dry.

Slow Growth

  • Usually related to low nutrients, poor lighting, or excessive surface flow.

Pro Tip

For the best results in shrimp tanks, allow the roots to grow long and dense before trimming. The hanging root systems create excellent shelter for baby shrimp and provide additional surfaces for biofilm growth, making Amazon Frogbit one of the most shrimp-friendly floating plants available.

Amazon Frogbit vs. Other Popular Floating Plants

Real Owner Experience with Amazon Frogbit

We've used Amazon Frogbit in shrimp tanks at The Shrimp Farm for years, and it remains one of our favorite floating plants. If we had to choose just one floating plant for a beginner shrimp keeper, Amazon Frogbit would be near the top of the list.

What we like most is the balance between growth rate and manageability. Unlike Duckweed, which can quickly take over a tank, Amazon Frogbit is easy to control and remove when it starts spreading too much. At the same time, it grows fast enough to help absorb excess nutrients and improve water quality.

One thing we've noticed is that shrimp spend a surprising amount of time around the root systems. As the roots grow longer, they collect biofilm and microscopic organisms that freshwater shrimp naturally graze on throughout the day. Newly hatched shrimp especially seem to benefit from the extra cover and food source.

The biggest mistake we see hobbyists make is placing Amazon Frogbit in tanks with excessive surface agitation. When the leaves stay wet from splashing water, growth often slows and the plants can begin to deteriorate. In calm water with moderate lighting, Amazon Frogbit is typically very easy to keep.

For shrimp tanks, we generally allow the roots to grow long and only thin the plants when they begin covering too much of the surface. This provides the maximum benefit for shrimp while still allowing enough light to reach the rest of the aquarium.

If you're looking for a floating plant that is easy to grow, helps reduce nitrates, and provides real benefits for shrimp, Amazon Frogbit is one of the plants we recommend most often.
